Homeowner Education Course:  Part of the qualification process for a Habitat home is the 32-credit-hour homeowner education program.  Being a Christian organization Habitat employs a fundamental Biblical approach to the curriculum used in this program. The program is designed to give functional and spiritual information to build a solid foundation for successful homeownership and family relationships.

The course is 8 full day sessions and 3 evening sessions. 4 courses are offered in the Spring and 7 in the Fall of the year. The summer months are reserved for families to work on the job sites in construction. Subject matter covered in this curriculum is as follows:

Full Day Classes

  • Biblical World View: Ken Ham    Answers in Genesis
  • Biblical Marriage: Kevin Leman  Making the most of Marriage 
  • Biblical Parenting: Kevin Leman    Value packed parenting
  • Biblical Finances: Dave Ramsey  Financial Peace University

Evening Classes

  • Home Maintenance: David Chenault, Construction Manager
  • Construction Technology: Larry Haun, How to Build a Home
  • Homeowner Insurance: Jim Beck, Nationwide Insurance
  • Mock Closing: Mary Hammons, Royal Title Co.

The objective of the full day classes is to present Christianity and its values relative to the home and family development while teaching real life applications of the necessary functions in the home. The evening classes are a more straightforward lecture and demonstration format to acquaint the prospective homeowner with new responsibilities they would soon experience.
