Our Families

Partner families at Habitat for Humanity are not simply "given" homes. Our program is not a hand-out, but a hand-up. In order for an application to be accepted for a Habitat partner family, they must meet five criteria:

  1. Must be a Hendricks County resident for at least one year.
  2. Must demonstrate an apparent need. Families must fall with an income level of between 30 to 55 percent of the area median income. Adjustments to these income levels are also made, based on the family's size (For how this percentage equates to current income figures, give Rachel Hyatt at our office a call: 317-272-1405, ext. 1 or email at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it ).
  3. A family must show a willingness to partner with Habitat by performing 400 "sweat equity" hours working on homes and in workshop training. Workshops provide valuable information on the responsibilities of home ownership, as well as comprehensive Christian education on a variety of topics.
  4. Families must pass a background check.

The selection committee reviews all applicants and submits their recommendations to the board of directors for final selection.

Following our mission, partner families are able to secure simple, decent, affordable housing through Habitat for Humanity. As always, Habitat for Humanity demonstrates the Gospel of Jesus Christ through love in action physically, functionally and spiritually.

Habitat welcomes all faiths to join in service for God's people in need, and to help them become successful in home ownership. While theologies may vary, we can all agree on the commandment to "love thy neighbor..." (Matthew 19:19).
